Since Christmas is over, I'm now able to post all the projects I worked on.

First up: I made 2 jelly roll race quilts. One for my daughter, and one for my son's girlfriend.
They love them!

I used Under The Mistletoe and Evergreen. They were easy - - AND - - I had them long-are quilted. The sweet lady that did them used to camp with my dad. She did a great job and now..... I want a long arm quilter!! SSHHH Don't tell Mr. Inspiring!!

I also made a stocking for a Secret Santa swap I was in. It turned out pretty good! My person really liked it!

It was the first time I machine quilted something that detailed and I really enjoyed the process.

Next up and most recent, I made a baby quilt for a friend of mine who's getting ready to have her first little bundle. They found out it's a boy and Killian is the name they've chosen. Sarah is an animal lover. They have 3 dogs and 5 cats and are always nursing strays and kittens. I chose some puppy dog fabric and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I did a disappearing 9-patch on the front, and patched a little bit on the back.

I quilted it with brown thread. The above pictures are during. Here is finished!

And I end with a tip. I make my own binding. I hate when I iron it in half, and it piles up on the floor. I have cats and the binding appeals to their playful side. Not a goot thing with an iron around.

I started keeping it together with a pants hanger that clips. That way it stays neat and clipping it helps keep the crisp fold down the middle.
Currently, I'm working on 2.25" hexies. I want to make a quilt for my bed. I've not gotten to do that yet!!!

Hugs ~~ SuzHi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-29495933911947857732015-11-12T22:20:00.000-06:002015-11-16T22:12:40.223-06:00Getting Ready for ChristmasMy grandson LOVES the American flag. Every time he sees one flying at someone's house or at a business, he tells me: Look, Maw-Maw!! There's my flag!!!

On my Quilty To Do list, I've had 'make a quilt for B' near the top for a while.... and never did it. Until now.

Maybe 3 years ago, I found a pattern for a quilt on Pinterest (I know, right?? Me? on Pinterest??) So I threw it together....... It was 24" x 44". Long and skinny and I just didn't know what to do with it. Table runner? Wall hanging?? Just some sort of decoration??? I don't know...

Well, it was laying on the table in my craft room, and B saw it and claimed it. Sure you can have it buddy... but I need to fix it..........

And into the unfinished project box it went....... Hopefully, he forgot about it.....

This past summer, I saw in Pinterest (oooo shocker!!) someone was putting together a collection of wonky stars to make quilts for veterans and soldiers (I think), and I decided those wonky stars would be PERFECT for the flag quilt...... and I made 14 of them..... And added 7 to each side.

Well, I think that turned out pretty good, even if I do say so myself. Mr. Inspiring (Paw-Paw Inspiring??) thinks that B is going to LOVE it. I purchased some navy fabric with little stars sprinkled all over and hand quilted it, and then grabbed a few of the fabrics used in the quilt top for the binding. I haven't taken a picture of it yet all quilted and washed and crinkly.... yet. I'm not happy with my binding and may redo it.

I'm also making a quilted laptop bag for my daughter. Hopefully I'll be able to post pictures of it next week. I'm using Joel Dewberry's Aviary fabric line for that and it's looking pretty cute so far....

Have a great week! What Christmas projects are you working on??

Hi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-17063002583931138812015-02-26T19:49:00.000-06:002015-02-26T19:49:02.062-06:00First Quilt of 2015I made the following quilt for my boss's daughter who was scheduled to be induced to have her sweet baby girl today! After talking to Sandy (grandma and boss's wife) I found out that the nursery was decorated in pastel pink, pastel lavendar, and pastel teal - - all in butterflies.

Do you know how hard it is to find pastel butterfly fabric right now?? I spent HOURS looking at all the online fabric sights I could think of...... no luck............

So I decided to search butterfly quilt blocks. I figure that I could at least have the colors in the shape of a butterfly. I came across the pattern, Painted Ladies from Fig Tree Quilts and I fell in love. You can find the pattern here .

I went to my (sort of) local quilt shop to choose the fabrics for my quilt and I ended up getting some wonderful reproduction fabrics!! FINALLY!!! I get to use some of this colorful, soft lusciousness!! (and please forgive me..... I don't remember what lines these fabrics are from! I was too excited to pay attention.....)
I do believe that the darker purple is my favorite. You probably can't see it real well in the picture, but the print is from the nursery rhyme Hey Diddle, Diddle. It's so cute!

So here's the picture of the whole thing. And the back - - I believe the back is from Riley Blake.... I love how this fabric feels and when I pulled it out of the dryer??? All that warm, quilty crinkliness was mine to enjoy!! My favorite part of the quilting process!!

The quilt measures out at about 50" x 50", which is a really nice snuggly size! The pattern called for 30 butterflies (5 rows of 6) and I cut it back to 16 butterflies (4 rows of 4). I love this quilt!!

I just hope Baby Aspen and her family enjoy it!!!

Here's a picture of the quilt I made for her brother, Nolan a couple of years ago. It wasn't as big because his grandma wanted it for his bassinet.
It seems like 2014 just flew by........

The first major milestone was the wedding of our friends' daughter, Sarah. She and Mike planned an outside wedding, but because of the weather......... it ended up being held indoors, at the reception venue.
It was a beautiful wedding and a really fun day. That was in June.

In July, we took a 10+ day vacation to Silverton and Taylor Park, Colorado. We went with about 20 other couples and rode 4-wheelers and side by sides in the mountains. After we got use to the elevation, we had a great time! There was still SNOW on the ground!! Crazy!

I had a huge list of things to do: (aka MAKE)... Pew bows, aisle runner, flowergirl dress, and a bunch of decorations for the reception. (As mother of the bride and having had hired a photographer, I didn't take any pictures that day. I wish I had...... but....... Hind sight, right?)

And during all of this we finished working on our house and put it on the market. We ended up accepting an offer right after we got back from vacation!! But.... it was contingent on the sale of their house!! The tentative closing date was a week before the wedding. YIKES!!! They ended up not selling their house quick enough to meet that closing date. We finally closed on it a couple of weeks after the wedding. That meant, as soon as we got home from the wedding, we had to start packing boxes like crazy people!!! And, on top of that, our son also purchased a house and he moved into to it 3 days before the wedding....... Talk about hectic?!?!?!!

And, then at the end of October, our friends' other daughter, Christina, got married!! It was a beautiful fall wedding at a winery!! The weather was actually rather warm for October, but it was just lovely!!

Hi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-41583068857542903642015-01-22T20:52:00.000-06:002015-01-22T20:52:18.965-06:00Update on my Last Quilt (i've been meaning to post this for a while.....)So, when I made my grey and lemon quilt, I had this itching to make it, but had no idea who I was making it for. It's kind of hard to explain to a non-creative minded person. I just knew I had to make this quilt for no other reason than I had to make this quilt.

When I was close to having this quilt complete, I found out that a man in our town was having some health issues, and his aunt was planning a benefit auction. Thanks to Facebook, I found out that she was looking for donations for the auction. This is what I had been compelled to make the quilt for!!

You see, the first quilt I made, my breast cancer quilt, I donated to our local breast cancer dinner and auction.
Hi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-36804128681517073152014-05-06T22:06:00.000-05:002014-05-06T22:13:19.216-05:00A New Quilt!!Hello, Everyone!

I'm so sorry that I don't post very often............ I promise I have good intentions!!! I post one post and think to myself "I'm on a roll!!" LOL!!

Well, I do have good news! We have had our house on the market for 2 1/2 weeks and according to our realtor, we should be receiving an offer by the end of the week or by next Monday. This family has looked at the house twice and are pretty excited! YAY Not too shabby for a town of only 8,000 or so people!

And our offer was accepted on another house. Things seem to be falling in place! sshhhh!! I don't want to jinx it!

The new house is like a blank canvas and I just can't wait to start in with the ideas I have swimming in my head! And I'm going (to try really hard) to post about my projects!! I can't wait!

In the mean time, tho, I'm trying really hard to not get any big involved project going here at the house. But - - I've been itching to do SOMETHING!! So, Sunday I decided to make a quilt!! And I got the top finished tonight!! I would have had it all sandwiched together, but........ I just didn't have enough fabric to make the backing that I wanted...... So I need to go to Hobby Lobby, which is about 30 minutes away.

I've had this gray and lemon fabric for 2 - 3 years. I just didn't get into a hurry to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with it - what kind of quilt I wanted to make.

Then Sunday, I was wandering through Pinterest......... (imagine that - right??) and I came across this quilt. Lindsey over at Inspiring Creations designed it. Click Here to go see her 4-Patch Slice pattern. It was soo EASY and it went together quickly!! And hey -- I pretty much had all the fabric for it!

She made her's with 20 blocks and I only used 16 blocks. Counting the 2 borders, my quilt is 55 inches square. That's a nice cozy size!!

Mr. Inspiring got me a Nikon D3200 DSLR camera and I'm taking a photography class. So, hopefully, when I have the quilt done, I'll manage to take some pretty - hopefully outside - - pictures!!

Thanks for visiting and thanks for tolerating my sporadic posts...... HOPEFULLY I'll pick it up a bit!

Happy Spring!
We have apples on our tree!! It usually only produces every other year, or every couple of years. We had a TON of apples on the tree last year and I posted about all of the apple butter I was able to make (and we still have some!!). You can see that post here!

Last year, my grandson picked apples with me and apparently loved doing so. He's been talking about picking apples since this spring. At that time, I wasn't even sure we'd have any. But the apples are growing on the part of the tree that didn't produce any last year. And when I was looking at the tree this morning, I realized that it looks like 4 thees that have actually grown together. So... we have apples!!!

I think I've been picking a apple a week for the past month or more to check to see if they were 'done' yet. Yesterday, the apple was good!! They are DONE!! They'll keep getting redder but now they are big and juicy and YUMMY! It's time!!

This morning, Mr. Inspiring and I picked a 5-gallon bucket full. I was soo excited!! I found a canning recipe for Apple Pie Filling!! You can see it here! The Pocket Change Gourmet even includes some super-cute labels. Go visit her and give her some love. The recipe is soo easy!! I followed the recipe exactly, except I must have used more apples and less syrup in the jars because I was able to get 7 quarts from one recipe. I then made 3/4 of the syrup recipe and was able to get 5 more jars.

I made a total of 12 jars of apple pie filling!! Aren't they pretty??

As I was making my labels and putting them on the lids, I found that one of the jars didn't seal.

Dang it............. (yay!!!)

I had to go ahead and bake something with it.

And what better recipe than my all time, FAVE O RITE, super-yummy, positively D-LISH, most awesomest (yes, that is a word.) recipe for Apple Crisp.

I'm now going to share that recipe with you. You can thank me later...........

Keep in mind this is the full recipe. Tonight, I only made the topping.

Hi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-49994027251683261382013-08-30T21:40:00.000-05:002013-09-02T13:29:32.128-05:00When One Door ClosesHi, it's me, Suz! This is my second post in a week!! What can I say? I missed you!!!

This is a project that I've been wanting to post, but I never have had my bedroom all finished with all the cute accessories like I see a lot of y'all doing. After 2 years, I figure my room probably isn't going to get accessorized any time soon, so I'll just show you what I did!

I made a headboard out of a door I picked up on Craigslist. The guy bought the door unfinished and just hung it like that. When I got it from him, it was basically a new door, just dirty! It even still had the plastic on the windows.

I wanted the headboard to look old and worn. I thought about what colors had been popular during the past 20 or so years. I decided to paint a coat of hunter green all over it, and then a coat of navy blue. Then I took some dark brown paint and some turquoise paint and painted random spots on the door with those colors. After all that was good and dry, I painted a couple of coats of a nice, creamy off-white.

When all that was dry, I became a distructive little crafter! I jabbed it with a screwdriver, and scratched it all up with a brush. I even carved our wedding date and our names into it. Then I sanded a lot of the edges. It's pretty cool because you can see the paint layers as if it really were an old door!!

I mixed up a very thin concoction of water and dark brown paint and wiped the whole door down. The wood was very fresh looking where I was trying to make it old, and this helped age the wood and create the look I wanted. After all that was dry, I put 3 coats of polyurethane on it. Mr. Inspiring added a crystal looking old door knob. That was what it needed and I love how it turned out. Mr. Inspiring loves that I made it special for us.
I hate that I only post once in a while.

Why??? Why can I not post on my blog??

I love blogging and visiting all my blog buddies (that's a real term!! I'm sure of it!)....

This past week, a co-worker gave Mr. Inspiring and me 2 5-gallon buckets of fresh ripe tomatoes and a bunch of green peppers, banana peppers, and jalapeno peppers....... So.... what did I do?? I made SALSA, of course.

And yes, this post will reveal how sorely out of practice I am with my blogging......

No. During. Pictures...........

I can share my recipe....................

Salsa (De Susanna - haha!! )

6 quarts peeled & chopped fresh tomatoes
3/4 cup white vinegar
5 jalapeno peppers, chopped (remove the seeds for less heat)
5 banana peppers, chopped
1 medium green pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
3/4 tsp minced garlic
1 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp cilantro flakes
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1 can black beans, drained
1 small can tomato paste

The easiest way to peel tomatoes is to cut an 'x' in the bottom of the tomato and make a couple small slits by the stem, then drop them in boiling water. As soon as the skin cracks/splits, remove the tomato from the boiling water and drop into a bowl of ice water. It peels off so easily.

Core the tomatoes and then chop them up. Put into a large stock pot and add the remaining ingredients. You'll need to let the mixture cook for at least an hour, to cook down and get thick.

When I made mine, I added the beans and paste after it had cooked for about an hour. The tomato past helps thicken it up, and also adds a sweetness to it. (I also added a few squirts of lime juice into the second batch..... I think it helped cut some of the sweetness of the tomatoes.)

After it's cooked down, spoon it into clean, dry canning jars and cover with your 2-piece lids. Water bath can it for 40 minutes, at least. Remove the jars from the boiling water and let cool. As it cools, your lids should ping as they seal. I usually let the jars cool overnight and then check them in the morning. If the lids have any give or pop when you push them, you didn't get a good seal and you'll have to refrigerate those jars and eat them first.

This recipe is very east and you can add or subtract the peppers and seasonings for your personal tastes. We like our's on the hot side.

Mr. Inspiring's exact words: I never want salsa from the store ever again!!

I hope y'all enjoy the recipe!!

Hugs ~~ SuzHi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-65321990775545971362013-02-03T14:04:00.000-06:002013-02-03T14:40:12.334-06:00Pillowcase Love!!When I started getting ready for Christmas last fall, I decided not to stress myself out too much. I wanted to enjoy the holidays. Remember the little moments. Pay attention to those I love.

I didn't create a HUGE list of gifts that I 'had' to make. One project I made was a couple of pillowcases - one for me and one for Mr. Inspiring........... They really got me into the Christmas mood! I found a tutorial in Pinterest, and then somehow I lost it........ I think somewhere I saw that these pillowcases were called 'sausage' cases??

Well, now Valentines Day is close and I've decided that I might like to try to make pillowcases for us for every holiday and/or season. So here is my Valentine edition.

Mr. Inspiring and I went to the fabric store last weekend. I found these fabrics...... Actually, they probably wouldn't have been my first choices, but when you wait til nearly the last minute, Hobby Lobby tends to sell out quickly and there wasn't much left to choose from.

First, you need to pick out 3 fabrics. One will be your main fabric - the part that you put your head on. We'll call that 'A'. Then you need a piece of trim, 'B'. And the end, the contrast piece, we'll call 'C'.

For each standard pillowcase, you'll need to cut:

A = 24" x 41" (for King size pillows: 32" x 41")
B = 3" x 41" (Same for King)
C= 12" x 41" (Same for King)

At this point, I press all the pieces. Then you want to press 'B' in half, long-ways.

To assemble:

Lay 'C' on your table, right side up.

Lay your trim piece 'B' next, cut side at the top, even with the top long cut side of 'C'.

Lay piece 'A', FACE DOWN, a long cut side lined up with the other 2 pieces of fabric.

Next, kind of roll piece 'A' up from the bottom, enough that you can fold 'C' over it to meet the top, but keep the rolled part of 'A' far away enough from the top that you don't pin it and sew it.

Fold the bottom of 'C' over everything and pin all the pieces along the top edge. You should only have 5 cut edges that you're pinning. No folded or rolled edges.

With a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch the lenth of the fabrics.

Turn the pieces right side out by pulling and unrolling all at the same time. You'll find that you now have a hidden seam. (Isn't that cool??)

Next, trim the side ends so that all three pieces are all the width of the main fabric.

Fold the pillowcase together, right side out. Pin it (if you want, at this step I usually don't) and stitch around the edge. You'll want your seam allowance to be less of a 1/4" because we're going to put a clean seam on this part, too. Stitch the cut edges (see my picture).

Turn inside out and work your corners to try to get a good 'square' corner. It helps to press when you're working these corners and seams to help make them all straight and even. Sometimes the fabric is rather uncooperative. I've found that if I kind of roll the seam with my left hand as I'm ironing with my right, I can get a flatter, straighter seam.

Next, stitch around the edges you just stitched, only you'll be stitching the wrong side of the fabric. This step will make the 'clean' seam.

Turn right-side-out, trim your threads, and voila - - You've got your pretty pillowcase!!

Yay Me!!

Does anyone else LOVE that song by Brad Paisley?? You're singing it to yourself now, aren't you??

There's a reason why I named this post that............. This past week, I've been working on a project. I guess it could be considered my first 'commissioned' quilt. My boss and his wife are expecting their first grandchild. Mrs. Boss asked me if I would make a quilt for the baby if she bought the fabric. I said sure (She's my BOSS'S wife...... I'd never say no!! Besides, they are great people and I love them!!)

So she got the fabric to me around the beginning of December. It's really cute fabric! But.... Not what I would pick for a baby boy. Newborns get baby blue, baby pink, soft yellow, mint green.......... pastels, right?
Yep - - That's Urban Zoologie by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman in the Turtle print and they chose some dark brown Kona and Painter's Canvas Magnolia Lane Collecton. I was told to do whatever but they would like to have big enough blocks with the turtle print. So that's what I did, but it needed more..... something......... so I also purchased some of the tangerine dots fabric in the Remix line and it just made it. Before I added it, I asked Mr. Inspiring what he thought and I gave him some options to choose from and he chose the tangerine dots, too.

I think it turned out rather cute!! I did a disappearing 9-patch and made sure the chocolate was my middle square. I used chocolate thread and just quilted the turtle and chocolate squares. I didn't quilt the green rectangles. Then in the tangerine border, I quilted random squares.

Hi! I'm here!! I'm still alive and kicking.........

I just took a gander at my blog and I am so ashamed of myself! I did a whole whoppin 13 posts in 2012!!

I'm so sorry!

Anyway...........

New day! New Year!!

Let me summarize 2012.....

Not the best year................... Not the worst year.............. Parts were GREAT! Parts really sucked...........

At the end of March, Grandma Ruthie passed away. She was 93 years old. She had a stroke and never recovered....... She was the absolute sweetest, most gracious person I have ever known. I miss her and her giggles............

We've been going through her house and out buildings. I've found wonderful treasures!! Like 6 or 7 OLD quilts. I don't think she make them. I think they were either gifts to her, or perhaps relatives made them while they stayed with her. She and Grandpa ran a small town mom & pop 'resort'. They had a small motel right across the road from a huge lake and in the summer guest would come to fish and in the winter, they'd come to duck and goose hunt. The quilts were never washed and never used. Well I was a little scared at first, but I went ahead and washed one and it came out beautifully. So I washed them all and divided them out in the family. I also found some crock bowls and wooden boxes and an old aluminum water cooler, 3 old suitcases, and some fabric. The fabric still had the price on it. One and half yards for $.42. Yep -- that's forty-two cents.......

Or how about 4 yards for $.28 (TWENTY-EIGHT CENTS)!! It looks like the popular 1930's reproduction fabric you can buy today, but.......... its the REAL thing!!

I brought home flowers from her service home to make ornaments with. They were beautiful. Roses. Lillies. Carnations. All kinds..........

My cat, Bubby, decided to <strike>taste</strike> eat them........... Lillies are highly toxic to cats.......... I know that now. He went into renal failure and we had to put him down. That was at the end of June. He wasn't even 5 yet.

Two weeks later, friends of ours had 2 kittens that were brothers that needed a home. I really didn't want to do it. I wasn't ready and neither was Mr. Inspiring.......

But how the heck could you say no to that cute little pink nose??

The black and white kitty is Purrcy and the gray kitty is Grady. It is so much fun to watch them. They fight and play and love each other. They don't know a day without each other. They aren't Bubby, but they each have a couple of his traits. They are so sweet.

And they thoroughly enjoyed Christmas. They thought the tree was just for them. Through out most of the holiday season, my tree leaned....... badly...........

This is why........

Yep, that's Purrcy.......... laying down in the top of my tree. I usually don't take down my tree until this weekend.... It was down the day after Christmas.

I've been working on a few projects. Miss Inspiring has made a big life decision and she and her boyfriend are remodeling a house to live in. She not exactly crafty, but she sure is coming up with a lot of ideas for me to work on. Isn't that the way it goes? That's perfectly fine with me!!

Happy New Year, Everyone! I've missed you and I plan on posting more regularly!!

Camo Bear Paw quilt I made for my boss when he turned 50.....

We've had this wonderful apple tree in our back yard and never really did much with it. It only bears fruit every couple of years. Last time, our neighbor made some absolutely delicious apple butter. So this year, when apples started showing up, I decided that I was going to make apple butter.

mmmmmmmmmmm The house smells wonderful!!

I'm happy to share my recipe - - Just let me know!!!

Happy Fall, Ya'll!!
I used any fabric I could find that had an association with breast cancer awareness. I also added some filler fabrics to get it balanced out.

The picture above is the quilt - done!! The picture below is right before I put the border on it. I guess I didn't take a picture of the full quilt when it was done, just shots of it laying on chairs. What was I thinking?

So I need to share some things with you. The reason I made it? Well, my dad and my brother both passed away from Multiple Myeloma, three years apart. I figure if I can help raise money for cancer treatment and cure, for any kind of cancer, that might help lead to treatment and cure for other cancer, like Multiple Myeloma ~ right?

The thing that I feared most about doing this quilt was quilting it. The thought of hand quilting just...... scared me. It would take me forever, right? Nope, it actually went very quickly and hand quilting it was my favorite part!! I just stitched around every square and rectangle about 1/4" from the seam. I loved doing it!!

Ok - - You've been warned......

We took Lucy to the shed yesterday and apparently she ingested something that didn't quite agree with her. Mr. Inspiring and I have not figured it out, but..... she's still not feeling 100% yet.

Last night she threw up in our bedroom 4 times. Not all at once, mind you, but through out the night. I don't know about you, but I don't clean those kinds of messes up so well in the middle of the night. I do what I think is good enough and then go back to sleep with the plan to take care of it in the morning.

Well, (remember you were warned) I have never seen a mess like this come from a human or a feline. Actually, I've not seen it at all............. EVER. Dark, almost black ooze....... weird.......

In your spray bottle, mix equal amounts of ammonia and hot water. Spray your stain. Cover with the cotton towel, and steam iron it. Press down and really get the steam in there, but, it does stink...... so try not to breathe in the steam. Yuck!!

Jillee says you don't need to scrub, but I found that after I sprayed it, before I steamed it, if I worked the solution in with a scrub brush, it did even better!!

On thing I've pinned is a home made soap scum remover (you can see the pin here!!) The recipe is one cup of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of liquid soap (I used Dawn), a few drops of essential oil (I used Young Living Peppermint oil in my bathroom and Young Living Thieves oil in my kitchen), and some water. That's it!!!

Hi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-47204109470873337992012-04-28T08:20:00.000-05:002012-04-28T08:20:39.659-05:00Still Alive!!Hi, Ya'll ~~ I'm checking in to let you know that I am still alive and as onery as ever!! It's been a busy Spring and I have so sucked at keeping posts updated on my blog.

The shed - Pa Pa's House according to our grandson - is finished and wonderful!! We've had a party out there the last 2 weekends and have had so much fun. The first party was a going away party for Son #1. His work is sending him to EGYPT for at least 2 months and this momma ain't too happy about it....... I'd feel MUCH better if he were going to Canada!! But it is a good opportunity for him and he will make good money so............ I don't have too much say in it. That means that grandson and I will be doing some serious bonding!! Cody leaves Monday. :-( But - - in searching for that silver lining that helps me make it through these kinds of things, I'm thinking that his being in Egypt just MIGHT cause me to stress just enough to lose some poundage??? Like maybe 10 - 15 lbs???

Party #2 was a surprise birthday party for one of our good friends. We had been planning it for nearly 3 months and he didn't have a clue! We are all very proud of ourselves for pulling it off!!

Sad note - Mr. Inspiring's grandma passed away at the end of March. To me, she was the epitomy (sp??) of God's Grace. I never heard a cross word come from her. She ALWAYS expressed how thankful she was for everything she'd ever been given. She appreciated everything anyone ever did for her. She loved life. She loved her family. She loved her friends. She loved our Lord. She's in Heaven now and is our family Guardian Angel. She is dancing and singing with Grandpa and Mr. Inspiring's daddy. She has no more pain and is not suffering from Altzheimer's/Dimentia any longer. She is beautiful and peaceful and helping our Father ready Heaven for the rest of us. Until we meet again, Grandma Ruthie....... xoxoxoxo

I've been hand quilting - stitch in the ditch - my red quilt and I'm finding it is a rather crazy task. The backing that I chose is red fabric with small white print. It's hard to see my stitches and I've caught myself quilting parts that I've already quilted..... I don't think I'll stitch in the ditch again. It's driving me crazy.

Well - - that's what's been going on, in a nutshell..... What have you guys been up to?? Hugs ~~ SuzHi, I'm Suz!!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12588509176383457713noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8357319029611719171.post-18749526275184927752012-02-28T06:57:00.000-06:002012-02-28T07:02:09.295-06:00Italian Cream Cake - Soo Yummy!!This past Friday, Grandpa Inspiring turned 82. Saturday we had a birthday dinner in his honor.

I tried a new cake recipe - and it was DELISH!!

Incredibly Delicious Italian Cream Cake

Cake Ingredients:
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cut shortening (I used Crisco butter flavored sticks)
2 cups granulated (white) sugar
5 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup flaked sweetened coconut
1 tsp baking powder
2 cups all-purpose flour

Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients:
1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cut butter, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups powdered sugar
2 Tbsp light cream (I used half n half)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup sweetened flaked coconut

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease three 9-inch round cake pans with spray and then flour the pans.

In a small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in the buttermilk, set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup butter, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the eggs, buttermilk mixture, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 cup coconut, baking powder and flower. Stir until just combined. Pour into prepared cake pans.

Bake for 30 mins, or until golden brown and cake tests done. Allow to cool in pans 5 minutes then turn onto wire racks and LET COOL COMPLETELY.

To make frosting: In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, 1/2 cup butter, 1 tsp vanilla and powdered sugar. beat until light and fluffy. Mix in a small amount of cream to attain the desired consistency. Stir in nuts and coconut. Spread between layers and on top and side of cooled cake.

When I made this Saturday, I didn't allow it to cool enough. I mean, it wasn't hot by any means, but... it wasn't completely cool. So I put it together, and to keep it from sliding, I put tooth picks in it.

That didn't help.

The frosting slid around in the car........ kind of oozed...... So I had to fix it. I did and it was ok...

Actually, it was very yummy and Grandpa loved it.

So here's how it happened......... Thursday night, Ms. C and I were discussing what we'd like to have for supper Friday......... I mentioned I was in the mood for home made pizza........ I usually got one of those Martha White pizza crust mixes that you add a half cup of water to the mix, knead it for a bit and then voila, you have a 'fresh' pizza crust............. Who knew that HOME MADE pizza crust was as easy as that? And that it tastes SO MUCH BETTER than anyhing else??? Not me!! Friday afternoon, I got a wild hair up my.... and decided to look for home made crust recipes online. They didn't look too hard.....

Well, I went to the grocery store after work and got the necessary ingredients. When I got home, instead of pulling up recipes on the internet, I pulled out one of my Taste of Home cookbooks.

OHHH EEMMMMM GGEEEEEEE

mmmmmmmmmmmm AAHHH-Mazing!!!

AAHHH-mazing Pizza Crust

2 pkgs (1/4 oz each) active dry yeast
2 2/3 cups warm water (110 - 115 degrees) divided
4 Tablespoons olive oil, divided
2 Tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
6 1/2 - 7 cups all purpose flour

In a medium bowl, empty both yeast packages and add sugar and salt. Add 2/3 cup of the warm water and stir to disolve. Add 1Tablespoon olive oil. Let sit for about 5 minutes so the yeast gets good and 'frothy'. Then add 2 more Tablespoons olive oil and the rest of the water. Stir to mix.

Transfer mixture to bowl for stand mixer and using your dough hook, mix 5 cups of the all purpose flour. Beat til smooth. Add enough of the remaining flower to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and eleastic, about 6 - 8 minutes. Grease a large bowl with the remaining olive oil. Place dough in greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover loosely with plastic wrap, and then a towl. Place in a warm area of your kitchen to rise until doubled - about 1 hour.

Punch down and divide. Roll out with rolling pin. Transfer dough to pans and form an edge all the way around. Spread out pizza sauce and top with your favorite ingredients and cheese. Bake in 425 oven for approximately 25 minutes.

** Notes.... My first batch of this dough, I divided it into 3 portions. I made 3 pizzas using 1 large Pampered Chef round stone and 2 of the rectangular Pampered Chef Stones. The edges puffed up and were chewy. The edges would have been excellent to stuff with cheese I divided my second batch of this dough into 4 portions. I put each portion into a zip top bag and put them in the freezer. This morning I got out 2 of the portions and put them into a greased 9 x 13 cake pan. I warmed my oven up to 200 dgrees and when it reached that temperature, I turned it off. I put the pan the dough was in into the oven with a bowl of water that I had just boiled. Fast thaw and it was awsome. The dough was stickier than when I first made it so I turned it out onto a floured surface and kneaded it again. I made 2 pizzas, one on the big round stone and one on one of the rectangle stones.

Also - - please know that you can not knead bread dough too much. Dough loves to be kneaded (don't we all??? *wink* *wink*)

Here's what ingredients I used for the pizza you see in the picture.

Cheap off-brand pizza sauce spread all over
pieces of Provolone cheese spread all over
pieces of thin sliced ham
browned ground beef (I added salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano when I browned it)
browned bulk sausage
pepperoni
chopped onion
chopped green pepper
covered with shredded mozzerella cheese

Why not??? Who knows?? I think I'm still suffering from my ADD...... And since we haven't had much of winter weather ...... YET..... I'm pretty sure I've got Spring Fever, too!!!

Anywho..... We changed out our front door a couple of weeks ago and I love it!!

The original door was a steel door that I did a faux wood grain on 6 years ago or so.... I did a great job, but unfortunately, when we installed the door, we only installed the door and used the old casing and hinges and stuff..... and over the years, the screws stripped out, the door caught on kinds of stuff, you had to lift the door up to close it right.. it was a mess.......

Oh, yeah - - did I mention that because I didn't SEAL it, it faded??? I promise, when I first did it, it looked great.

So Mr. Inspiring and I purchased a new door to install, and this one INCLUDED the casing. And I volunteered to do the faux wood grain again... AND I sealed it!

He just had to learn how to install it. And discovered that YouTube is a wonderful avenue to learn by, not to just watch stupid videos!!

And now that I've gotten this far in this post, I realize that I don't have a picture of the door actually INSTALLED.... See what I mean?? ADD/Spring Fever - - I'm so sure of it!!!

Anyway - - the door went in very well. I used my cricut and cut out house numbers out of vinyl. My neighbor across the street sent me a text message the next day "Suz - - I LOVE your new door!!" I said, "THANK YOU!! I do, too!!"

Faux wood graining is very easy!! My biggest tip on it tho: Make sure you are using the correct stain for your application. I accidentally got gel stain instead of regular stain, and it worked, but it took FOREVER to set/dry...... Regular stain works much better. The faux wood tool is really cool! Your local hardware store/paint store should carry the tool. You paint the stain on the door, and then run the tool through it, rocking it as you go. Play with it! You can achieve very realistic effects!

Thanks for stopping by! And I promise I'll try to post more often this month!!

Oh yeah - - Mr. Inspiring took the old door to the curb for the trash to pick up. Later that day, when I went to stand out in the yard and admire the new door, I saw the old door laying by the curb, all by itself, looking so lonely............ and I walked out to it, staring at the oval window...... with the pretty leaded glass that catches the light and sparkles like crazy.... and Mr. Inspiring saw me looking at it..... and I guess I must get kind of a glazed over look on my face when my mind starts creating things............... because he came out with a screwdriver, and without a word............ removed the glass from the door and put it in the garage..... He's learning!!!! And I just love him so much!! I am one lucky girl!!!
I'm thinking I'm going to really love this one and I'm so glad I'm making it for me!!!

Recently I bought a Lil Twister so I can make a twisted block quilt. I decided to use the fabrice I purchase about 4 years ago. It's fabric from the ovarian cancer collection and I had planned on making a rag quilt with it. Well, I never did that.
So I cut 5" squares out of my fat quarters and I need to sew them together so I can twister them!! And if it all turns out, I will probably donate it to the Relay for Life in April.....

Now I need to figure out how I want to arrange the fabric so I can twister with them!

But before I get to all this..... I'm hanging out with my little man (grandson) and we're watching Cars!!

I love weekends!! What are YOU doing this weekend??

Shamefully, I need to admit that today is starting down that same path. It's 8:30 am Saturday morning, and I've been up for 3 and a half hours...... [Up at 5 am on Saturday morning = WTH??]

I fixed coffee and fed the furballs

Enjoyed said coffee while blogging to see what everyone has been up to. Saw something I liked so I pinned it

Started pinning - looking at quilts - - looking at RED quilts

Remembered I want to find more ideas to repurpose doors and windows

And started searching for recipes for something for supper

While carrying all the laundry to the laundry room - - thus passing my craft room and remembering that I wanted to post about the quilt I started last weekend and oh yeah - - gotta go out to the freezer to get something for supper.

Remembered to take pictures of the beginnings of my red quilt and the inspiration for it

OH yeah - - I want to do some spray painting today since its supposed to be 66 degrees or so! And I've got some doors that I want to make a headboard and footboard with for the spare bed..... and don't forget about thos 42 windows!!!

CRAP - - I've got to start the laundry

Wandered in blog land some more and here we are.....

This year I acquired a couple of quilt books, and each one of them had the same picture of a quilt in it that I have fallen in love with....

The pattern is called Jigsaw and the fabric used is Rural Jardin by French General.....

SWOON..................

I WILL make this quilt with the same fabric.........

But in the mean time, for Christmas, I asked my MIL for red fabric so I can do a red quilt (my interpretation of a redwork quilt is the best way to describe what I have in mind)....... And she delivered!!! And gave me a gift certificate to a fabric shop for more!!!

Here are some of the blocks that I've come up with so far......

Sometime this weekend, I hope to be able to start my list of things I want to accomplish in 2012.... However, organizing and planning ahead like that is just sooo NOT my forte!!

Happy Saturday, everyone!!
I SOO Forgot To Tell You!!A couple of weeks before Christmas, Mr. Inspiring and I were doing some Christmas shopping. While traveling on the 'main' street in town, we drove by a house that was in the process of being torn down - by a friend of our's. It was an old brick farm house, with old, double hung, 6-pane windows. So I sent a text to his wife and asked her what they were going to be doing with the windows. She answered back and said they belonged to the guy that owns the house and property, but I could contact him to find out.

Well, I don't know him, and at that point, it was more curiousity than anything, so I decided not to call.

A couple of days later, while we were on our way to eat, I got a call from the wife. She asked me if I was still interested in the windows. I told her I guess, why..... She said that I could have them, HAVE them ALL, but they had to be removed from the property - FAST..... So after we ate, we went {in the rain} and picked them up. I guess I didn't count the windows in the house.......
Now, we just need to get our shed finished up so I can start on these babies!!! (OH YEAH - - it IS almost finished! I'll post pictures of that tonight or tomorrow!!)
I am truly sorry about that. I've got so many things going on, my title is perfect for the way I've been feeling lately.

This was the first family picture since 2006..... Little Mr. in the Middle LOVED his jammies with Buzz Lightyear on them...... He's such a sweetie pie!! {Little Mr. - not Buzz - hee hee!!}

My office shut down from Christmas Eve through January 2. That's right - I didn't have to work for 10 days. PERFECT time to get caught up on a project or two and get them posted so you all could see, right?

Well, THAT didn't happen. My youngest son, who lives with his dad, came and spent the week with us and I didn't want to miss a minute of his visit. And he had some requests...... Country Fried Steak, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Snickerdoodles...... Apparently his dad hasn't changed too much in the cooking department! And I loved having him here and I loved having special requests!!

Sunday was my ADD day, tho..... I spent the day taking down the Christmas tree and all of the decorations, rearranging the living room, then when I passed my craft room, I'd go in, sit down, and work on my new quilt project..... All of this bouncing from room to room and project to project carried over into Monday, too. I was READY to go back to work on Tuesday........... ok, so maybe not.......... I was READY to sleep in Tuesday - - yep THAT'S more like it!!

The t-shirt quilt for #1 son was a big hit - - he loves it! {Yay! Score one for Mom!}

Happy New Year Everyone - - I promise I will do my best to get myself back into a somewhat organized chaos kind of mindset and do better with taking pictures DURING the process of creativeness and getting them posted!!
